Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) today announced that Mike Fitzmaurice is stepping down as the men's basketball coach. He has directed NOVA's men's basketball program since the 2007-08 season.
Fitzmaurice has guided NOVA to a 103-82 record as the head coach and was instrumental in helping NOVA transition from a club program within the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) to membership in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
"Our success at NOVA has never been measured in wins," said Fitzmaurice. "Our success has always been measured in the number young men that have had the opportunity to continue their education and earn scholarships at four-year universities."
A highlight of Fitzmaurice's tenure came in 2011 when NOVA captured the VCCS championship with a 26-5 record.
"Mike Fitzmaurice has not only raised the basketball program from its infancy to today's outstanding program, but has increased higher education opportunities for our students," said NOVA Annandale Campus Provost Dr. Barbara Saperstone. "We have all benefitted from his hard work and dedication."
The 2012-13 season was NOVA's first as a sanctioned intercollegiate program through membership in the NJCAA. In the first year as an NJCAA member, NOVA finished with a record of 13-13 and semifinalist in the NJCAA Region 20 D-II Tournament.
In 2011-12, NOVA became a member of the NJCAA but still in transition from club status to intercollegiate. Fitzmaurice earned his 100th victory at NOVA on January 16, 2013 against Baltimore City (MD) Community College.
NOVA's winning ways have continued with membership in the NJCAA. In the first year as an NJCAA member, NOVA finished with a record of 13-13 and semifinalist in the NJCAA Region 20 D-II Tournament.
"Few can appreciate the work that Mike has done behind the scenes to help NOVA's athletic program develop," said College-wide Student Life Coordinator Brian Anweiler. "He worked tirelessly on behalf of NOVA's student-athletes and coaches."
Fitzmaurice was a long time AAU coach in the Washington Metro area prior to coming to NOVA.
He played collegiately at Prince George's Community College in Largo, MD. He later transferred to the University of Maryland and earned a business degree. Fitzmaurice, and his wife JoAnne, have two children.
His son, Sean, will serve as the interim head coach during the 2013-14 season.
