ANNANDALE – It's postseason time for the Northern Virginia Community College men's and women's basketball teams beginning Thursday evening at 6 p.m. on the campus of Cecil College.
Going into the postseason both teams are riding a wave of momentum as the Nighthawks are a combined 17-5 since the calendar flipped to January.
Thursday, March 7
6 p.m. – Women's Basketball versus Chesapeake (NJCAA Region 20 Quarterfinals)
Friday, March 8
12 p.m. – Men's Basketball versus Frederick (NJCAA Region 20 Quarterfinals)
The Nighthawks and Cougars go toe to toe for the second time in the last week. Fifth seeded NOVA and fourth seeded FCC split its two-game regular season series with the Nighthawks winning the last game 105-87 behind 41 points from Michael Elliot.
Robert Tartt led NOVA in scoring and rebounding this season, as the Falls Church, native averaged 14.4 points and 7.6 rebounds in 25 games. Terrell Walker, meanwhile, topped the Nighthawks with 104 assists, which was good enough for fourth in the region.
NOVA won three out of its last five to earn a spot as the eighth seed in the NJCAA Region 20 Division II Tournament. The Nighthawks fell to the Skipjacks 90-64 back in November despite getting 25 points from Natasha Porter.
Mia Buchanon led NOVA this season in scoring (410), rebounding (254) and blocked shots (25), while Porter dished a team-high 59 assists. Tiya Anderson, who played in just 10 games grabbed 102 rebounds.
