ANNANDALE – There is a full slate of action this week for the Northern Virginia Community College fall athletic teams. The soccer squad is in action Wednesday and Saturday, while the cross country team travels to Stevenson, Md., for the Shannon Henretty Invitational and volleyball plays four times starting Thursday at home.

After finishing sixth at the UMW Opener, the Nighthawks are looking for an improved race Saturday at the 6-kilometer Shannon Henretty Invitational on the campus of Stevenson University.
In last Saturday's race at Mary Washington, Kmaljeet Athwal finished the 4k race in 16 minutes, 22.6 seconds, which was good for 16th. Newcomer, Ashlianne Shigley also ended her evening run under 20 minutes, as she closed out in 19:26.90.
The Nighthawks even their record at 1-1last week after defeating Hagerstown 3-2 behind two goals from Max Medrano. Abdullah Al Maari also tallied a goal for NOVA, which gave him seven for his career moving him into a tie for sixth all-time.
Last season, the Nighthawks and Southern Maryland did not meet on the pitch, but two years ago NOVA was a winner 1-0 on a goal by Jefferson Zelaya. In 2017, NOVA defeated Chesapeake 14-0, as four Nighthawks scored multiple times.
This is the first week of action for the NOVA volleyball team beginning Thursday against Region 20 foe Anne Arundel. The Nighthawks welcome 11 newcomers this season and two returnees, with outside hitter Lauren Havill and setter Sarah Abisourour coming back.
