Nighthawks hang on for important win

LA PLATA, Md. – Deontae Compton scored a team-best 22 points to help the Northern Virginia Community College men's basketball team defeat Southern Maryland 85-78 Thursday evening in Region 20 Division II action.

The Nighthawks move over .500 for the first time season as they go into Saturday's at Cecil game at 11-10.

After going into the locker room up 37-34, the second half did not start off well for NOVA as CSM led by as much as six with just over 14 minutes left in the game. However, the Nighthawks were able to regroup and retook the lead on Emmanuel Miller's three with at 11:36 left.

The teams swapped the lead seven times over the final 10 minutes until Compton scored down low to give NOVA a 78-76 lead with 49 seconds remaining. The Nighthawks were able to close the game out by using a 7-2 run to secure the victory.
