NORTH EAST, Md. – Emmanuel Miller nailed the first shot for the Northern Virginia Community College men's basketball team, while Deontae Compton scored a team-high 30 to help the Nighthawks defeat Cecil 91-83 Saturday afternoon.
NOVA sits at 12-10 on the season and returns home Monday evening at 7 p.m. to battle Allegany.
Midway through the first half, Compton scored on an old fashion three-point play to give the Nighthawks a 21-point lead (30-9). NOVA, however, was not able to keep the momentum as the Seahawks finished the stanza on a 29-13 run to go into the locker room down 43-37.
In the second half, Cecil got within a bucket (66-63) with 9:43 left in the game, but the Nighthawks did not allow the Seahawks to get any closer. Later in the period, Michael Elliot, who scored 21 points drilled a three to put NOVA back up over double digits with 6:21 remaining.
The Nighthawks were able to put the finishing touches on the game at the 1:22 mark when Robert Tartt scored down low to make it 90-81.
