Nighthawks score early, but don’t hold lead

HERNDON, Va. – Alexandre Barbotteau scored in the fourth minute, but the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team couldn't hang on to the advantage as Anne Arundel escaped with the 2-1 NJCAA Region 20 Division III season finale victory Thursday afternoon.

The Nighthawks finish the regular season 4-4-2, and are the fourth seed in the upcoming Region 20 Tournament at Howard beginning Thursday, Oct. 25.

Setting up NOVA's early goal, Isai Rivera took the corner kick and sent the ball inside the box where Barbotteau was waiting and tapped the ball past Riverhawks goalie Austin Noland to put the Nighthawks in front.

Following the goal, AACC was able to keep the ball in its attacking zone and peppered Nighthawks keeper Antonio Berger, who made five saves by the 25th minute.

After Berger's fifth save, the Riverhawks had a corner kick and Cole Switzer found a hole in NOVA's defense and kicked it past Berger to tie it.

In the 38th minute the Nighthawks were on the attack as Esubalew Tenkolu was on the break, but his shot was just high and hit the crossbar and his miss kept the score 1-1 going into halftime.

During second half action, NOVA started with the ball, but AACC quickly regained control and three minutes into the new period took the lead.

The Nighthawks had a chance to tie the match during the 54th minute, but Yasser Jaafary header attempt went wide.

Later in the contest, NOVA was able to get a few more looks, but Noland made two stops and the other Nighthawks shots were off target.
