Shooting woes hurt Nighthawks

ANNANDALE – Mia Buchanon scored a team-high 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds, but the Northern Virginia Community College women's basketball team shot just 24 percent in the 92-48 NJCAA Region 20 Division II loss to Montgomery Monday evening.

The Nighthawks fall to 4-11 and return to the court Saturday afternoon at Anne Arundel for a 1 p.m. tipoff.

Buchanon scored three straight points early in the first quarter to give NOVA a 6-4 advantage, but that would be the last lead. The Raptors responded by outscoring the Nighthawks 18-7 over the final seven and a half minutes of the opening period.

During the second and third quarters NOVA struggled from the field as it shot 4-of-35 from the field and 0-for-7 from outside. Also during those 20 minutes of action, the Nighthawks turned the ball over seven times.

In the fourth quarter, Buchanon led NOVA with nine points, came up with four steals and swatted two shots. The Nighthawks, defense, meanwhile, forced the Raptors into seven turnovers and held them to 40 percent shooting (9-of-22).
